Started in 2010 by lifelong lurcher owners, Lurcher SOS is a Surrey based Lurcher and Greyhound Rescue. We have a network of supporters, fundraisers and fosterers in Kent, Hampshire, Sussex, Surrey, Essex, Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire, but we have homed our dogs throughout England, Wales and Scotland.
We are all volunteers and our mission is to rescue, rehabilitate and home abused, abandoned and neglected Lurchers and Greyhounds from Ireland and the UK. We rescue Whippets and all other sighthounds too and we are now proud to have helped Spanish and even Romanian Greyhounds!
Lurcher SOS takes in Lurchers and Greyhounds of all ages, from puppies to oldies. These dogs come to us for various reasons, some are strays, some have been ill treated and some needed to find a new home because their owners no longer wanted them. Some of these dogs are so emotionally and physically scarred that they will need long periods in foster homes, learning to trust humans again.
Our priority will always be dogs due to be put to sleep, or dogs in danger both in Ireland and the UK. Rehoming from private individuals will sometimes be considered. We will also try to help other sighthound rescues wherever possible.
All our dogs are placed in warm and loving foster homes
are carefully assessed and, if needed, rehabilitated. If a dog has come directly from a pound, it is first kept in isolation in private boarding kennels for 14 days to make sure it is not incubating any illnesses. Then, once it is fully vaccinated, it will be placed straight into a foster home. We do not have kennels as we believe that a home environment is the best way to assess a hound and enables us to best match a dog with a prospective adopter.
All Lurcher SOS rescue dogs are neutered where possible and given full veterinary treatment, microchipped and vaccinated, wormed and deflead before going to their new homes.
We are a non-profit organization and receive no funding. We rely solely on donations from the public and are always in need of fundraising support to cover the cost of the care of our dogs. We are actively seeking new foster parents and permanent homes for our rescue dogs. For more information on how you can get involved please look at our "How you can help Lurcher SOS" page.
