Atlas
Atlas is a young lurcher with a wonderful temperament and so many great qualities. He walks beautifully on the lead or in a harness, and is not fazed by loud noises, children, or other dogs of any size. He is a gentle giant and a total dream in the car, taking treats ever so gently.
Recently, Atlas met some Shetland ponies and reacted with calm curiosity. He enjoys a good hour-long walk and then is more than happy to snooze the rest of the day away. He is not a jumper or a climber, and is quite content with a comfy dog bed, though he does love a stretch out on the sofa.
Atlas has no hang-ups and is a gentle, loving boy. He appreciates head scratches and will patiently stand and stare at you until you give in. Like many lurchers, he has a few quirks. He is not a fan of water or wobbly bridges, and he loves to gather his toys, antlers, shoes, and even the odd piece of laundry to build a little nest. He has not chewed anything yet, he just likes having his treasures nearby.
Atlas had a great time running in an enclosed field recently, which really brought out his playful side and big smile. He is crate trained and will walk in on his own when it is time to settle down. He has put on some healthy weight and enjoys both kibble and raw meals. He is also a fan of duck wings and rabbit ears for an occasional crunchy treat.
He is settling well into home life and is now fully house-trained, sticking to a routine and asking to go out when needed. He is a quick learner and already knows commands like ‘no’, ‘wait’, and ‘go’. He follows the lead of the resident dogs and has learned to wait patiently for his meals. His recall in an enclosed space is good, as he tends to stay close to his pack, but like most lurchers, he may follow his nose if something interesting catches his eye. Ongoing recall training would be beneficial.
Atlas came into rescue with an old, badly healed fracture and has since had a rear leg amputation. He is now a proud and capable tripod, and his quality of life is just as joyful as ever.
At around a year old, Atlas is playful, gentle, and easygoing. He would thrive in a home with older dogs who can guide him without being too boisterous. He is the sweetest soul and will make a fantastic companion.
